With Investors Like Kane, Hull, Dent & Piven, Expect Stars & Sparks at the Opening of Harry Caray’s Tavern, Navy Pier

February 26, 2010

harrycarays.jpg

Beginning Monday at 5am (!!) celebs, athletes and fans will gather at Navy Pier for the grand opening of Harry Caray’s Tavern, Navy Pier. The party will continue all day, culminating in the 12th Annual Worldwide Toast to Harry, a celebration of what would have been the beloved announcer’s 96th birthday.

The newest HC features an impressive list of celebrity investors, including Hollywood stars Harold Ramis, Jeremy Piven and James Denton, and stars of sport Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, Geovany Soto, Aramis Ramirez, Patrick Kane, Bobby Hull, Marv Levy and Richard Dent.

Each celeb has his own special connection to Harry Caray’s, but Desperate Housewives star Denton has the most intimate knowledge of the franchise–he was a waiter at the Kinzie location 15 years ago, before he found fame on television. Denton might even be the one serving you your breakfast burger when he helps kick off the day with a “Spring Training Rally” at 5am.

Later, a handful of the investors, like Denton and Hull, will be joined by mascots from Chicago’s teams and special guests like Len Kasper, Joe Piscopo, Bill Kurtis, Otis Wilson for the 7:40 pm Toast to Harry. Immediately after the toast the night will be punctuated by a special winter fireworks display off the Pier.

I’ll be there, wearing my huge Harry Caray glasses–stop by and say hi!

At Home With Cubs Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg

February 26, 2010

All this week, ABC 7 News is letting viewers peek inside the pads of Chicago athletes and celebs for a segment called “Sweet Homes Chicago.” Before Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg headed to Mesa for Spring Training, he and his wife Margaret welcomed ABC 7’s Roz Varon into their Streeterville condo for a tour.

Here’s the piece from Thursday’s ABC 7 News.

Patrick Kane Schools Today Show Correspondent–Unfortunately, It’s Not Al Roker

February 26, 2010

Before Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane left for Vancouver to play with the US Olympic hockey team, he got one last tune-up on the ice, taking shots at NBC’s Kevin Tibbles. Netminder Cristobal Huet gave Tibbles a few hints (like how to put on his pads correctly), but the correspondent was clearly no match for Kaner.

You gotta love the fact that they used the Hawks’ goal song, Chelsea Dagger, for the intro…

At Home With Blackhawks D-Man Brian Campbell

February 25, 2010

All this week, ABC 7 News is letting viewers peek inside the pads of Chicago athletes and celebs for a segment called “Sweet Homes Chicago”.  In one such feature, meteorologist Tracy Butler joined Blackhawks defenseman Brian Campbell at his home for a game of pool, Top Gun, a closet raid and some lazy time on the couch.

Here’s the piece from Wednesday’s ABC 7 News.

Ten Good Reasons Kenny Williams Doesn’t Want Ozzie Guillen On Twitter

February 25, 2010

You can’t blame Chicago White Sox GM Kenny Williams for being worried about Ozzie Guillen’s new Twitter account. The fiery team manager is the man behind some of the most highly publicized rants in sports, and now he’s got a forum to spew his vitriol 24/7, not just when the media is around.

According to the Sun-Times’ Joe Cowley, when Williams first heard via text that Guillen had joined the social networking site, he didn’t believe it. Later, in person, he responded: “No comment … and make sure you write that it is a no comment with a headshake from side to side.”

Guillen raised a few eyebrows just three tweets in, firing off this little gem:

But a little boredom is nothing compared to the [bleep] that has come out of Guillen’s [bleeping] mouth in the past. Yes, he’s been responsible for some [bleeping] colorful quotes over the years.

For ten good reasons why Williams doesn’t want Ozzie on Twitter, check out what Guillen’s Twitter Feed might have looked like if the site had been around a few years earlier, in time for some of his most famous rants…
